Volkswagen ID.7 Preview

Volkswagen has a knack for making sedans that approach luxury car status without the associated price tag. One example was the sleek CC that graced U.S. roads earlier this century. More recently, the Arteon turned many heads with its rakish five-door profile and upscale cabin. The forthcoming ID.7 builds on the Arteon’s liftback aesthetics while embracing VW’s advanced all-electric platform that currently underpins the capable ID.4 crossover and the retro-inspired ID. Buzz minivan.

While Volkswagen hasn’t released a definitive launch date for the ID.7 in America, its anticipated release here means that an overview of what to expect can be helpful to potential buyers. We’ve compiled what we know—the ID.7 has been on sale in Europe since 2023—and the likely features and specifications for the U.S. version.

Trims and Powertrains

The Volkswagen ID.7 will be made in two trims: Pro S and Pro S Plus. Both trims start with a rear-wheel-drive configuration based on a single electric motor that puts out a robust 282 horsepower and a stout 402 ft.-lb. of torque. Available 4Motion all-wheel drive adds an electric motor to the front axle, increasing the combined output to 335 horsepower. Both trims incorporate an 82 kWh battery. VW hasn’t yet declared the ID.7’s range and charging capabilities.

Standard Features

The Pro S trim will have a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic dimming, 12-way heated power front seats with massage and memory, a heated steering wheel, an augmented reality head-up display, a power tailgate, proximity keyless entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, power-folding side mirrors, front and rear illuminated logos, and 19-inch wheels.

The Pro S Plus adds heated and ventilated front seats with an upgraded massage function, an adaptive damping system, dynamic steering, a premium automatic heating and ventilation system, and 20-inch wheels. Both trims will come with a choice of cabin motifs: Galaxy features black seats with white stitching and a dark interior palette, and Lunar offers gray seats with contrast stitching and a light interior theme. We expect the exterior colors to include Mythos Black, Glacier White, Moonstone Grey, Aquamarine Blue, and Kings Red.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The ID.7’s deep technology bench includes IQ.Drive, Volkswagen’s suite of advanced driver assistance features. This technology list will include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and automatic headlights. As for additional capabilities that should be standard on higher trims and possibly available on lower trims, expect hands-on semi-autonomous driving support, semi-automatic parking assistance with Memory Parking, parking sensors, and a surround-view monitor. VW has also mentioned the availability of Emergency Assist, which can detect an incapacitated driver and bring the vehicle to a stop.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The ID.7’s infotainment experience will center on a 15-inch touchscreen and a multi-speaker audio system (for example, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon arrangement in the Pro S Plus). As with Volkswagen's other EVs, we anticipate that the ID.7 will have standard supporting technologies like navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to connected services via VW Car-Net.
