What are the different types of chargers?
- Level 1: Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt household outlet and is the most basic of the three options. While it’s convenient and requires no special installation, it provides the slowest charging rate, typically only about 2 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. This type of charger is best for overnight charging and for those who drive only short distances.
- Level 2: Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt outlet, similar to what you would use for higher-consumption appliances like a clothes dryer. It charges significantly faster than a Level 1 charger, generally about 12 to 24 miles of range per hour of charging. Level 2 chargers are most often installed at home, workplaces, and public charging stations, so they’re common for everyday use.
- Level 3: Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, are the most efficient, resulting in up to an 80% charge in well under an hour. These chargers use direct current (DC) instead of the alternating current (AC) used by Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. They are much more expensive to install than the other two charger types, and so they are mostly limited to public charging stations. Their location along highways and in commercial areas makes them ideal for quickly recharging your vehicle during long trips.
