The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is bringing excitement into the VW lineup. Replacing the Passat, this fastback isn’t like its predecessor. There’s a certainty in its demeanor that’s sure to catch the eye of onlookers. Other automakers are coming out with new models as well, such as the 2018 Audi A5 Sportback. How do the two compare? Let’s find out.
Performance
The new VW Arteon brings to the table a strong TSI® turbocharged 4-Cylinder engine with a 2.0L displacement. On the other hand, the A5 Sportback offers an equally reputable but less powerful 2.0L 4-Cylinder. Although Audi is seen as the more luxurious brand, the 2019 Volkswagen comes hot out of the gate with an impressive 268 horsepower. That tops the Audi U.S. base model's performance of 252 hp. The EPA estimates have yet to be released for the Arteon. However, seeing as how it is the successor to the VW Passat, which has a EPA estimate of 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, expect it to either match or even beat the A5 Sportback's 24/34 mpg.
Interior and Features
Being considered one of the most impressive new VW vehicles, the Arteon proudly displays its top-notch interior features. Such amenities include the 9.2 in. touchscreen entertainment system. Not only is VW's screen over 2 inches larger than the A5's, but it also includes a motion sensor that allows you to navigate menus with a simple swipe of a hand infront of the screen - something Audi does not provide. Furthermore, the digital driving display in the Arteon comes standard, whereas you'll have to pay more and upgrade to the highest specification entertainment system for the A5 Sportback.
As for space, it truly is no contest. The A5 Sportback is compact and snug - typical for a sports vehicle. In contrast, the Volkswagen Arteon offers far more head and legroom as well as overall passenger volume. Consequently, the Arteon is a much more practical family sedan, as the extra space will allow easier installations for child seats.
Safety
A top concern for many drivers, safety isn't taken likely by either vehicle. But, the Arteon edges out its rival. For starters, both models have a Forward Collision Warning system, but the Arteon also offers adaptive cruise control that automatically reduce's the vehicle's speed once it detects an oncoming car on the road - The A5 does not.
Another safety feature only found in the Arteon is the Park Assist - This VW technology allows the vehicle computer to determine whether or not your Arteon can fit into a designated parking area. If so, it actually helps you steer your car into the space, regardless of if it being a parallel or perpendicular park. To top it all off, the Arteon's high beam headlights can automatically dim itself once oncoming traffic is detected. For Audi, you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way.
