Most vehicle reviews focus on two or three of the biggest sellers, apparently because the idea is that bestselling means the best. This is especially true when it comes to rating the mid-size sedans. There are dozens of models out there from which to choose, and one of the most highly decorated is the Honda Accord.

The Accord is indeed a fine model, but often overlooked in this cluttered vehicle class is the Volkswagen Passat. The 2018 Passat isn't much different than the models bearing this name from VW over the last five years, but that's a good thing. For a cost that's less than what one shells out for the uplevel Accord trims, the Passat comes out a bit ahead, especially in the areas of cost versus trim selection, passenger comfort, and interior design.

Trim Options

The 2018 Honda Accord is available in a total of five trims, but the only ones that are considered to be in the economy price range are the base LX and the uplevel Sport. Although the Accord boasts a good list of standard features on the LX including some of the advanced safety systems, the price really starts to climb if the EX, EX-L, or Touring versions are considered. On the other hand, the 2018 Volkswagen Passat is available le in six trims, and there's not much of a price increase or feature additions between the versions. This means a more comfortable feeling when comparing the trims. The buyer simply has more flexibility when choosing which standard and optional features are needed versus the overall price. For example, the Passat base trim, known as the S trim, comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, Bluetooth, a 5-inch screen display, and a rearview camera. That's comparable to the Accord base LX trim. The uplevel trims add on cruise control, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, and simulated leather upholstery. The Accord piles these on as well, but the price increase is noticeably higher.

Passsanger Comfort

The Accord is often referred to when interior comfort is discussed, but the Passat has something to say about this. The 2018 Passat is one of the quietest cruisers out there, and the comfort level for the passengers can't be beat. The ride is cushy but never soft, and the great suspension system effectively dampens out all of the small bumps and dips. So long as the turbocharged engine isn't being overworked, noise from under the hood is minimal. Vibration is also absent at high speeds. The 2018 Honda Accord insulates nicely against traffic noise, but wind and tire noise is considerably higher than what is experienced inside the Passat. The only area where it scores favorably against the Passat is the suspension system.

Interior Design

The 2018 Honda Accord offers great outward visibility, and the cabin is nicely appointed, but it's still a mid-size any way one looks at it. The seats are nicely cushioned, and drivers will appreciate the functional controls layout, but back seat passengers will suffer a bit from the lack of headroom. The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is also a mid-size, but from the inside it seems more like a full-size family cruiser. The amount of rear seat room is staggering, easily outdoing the Accord. The high roofline makes for easy entry and exit, especially in the rear seating area.

Both of these models shine, but the old-school design of the 2018 Volkswagen will appeal to many. The list of standard and optional features rivals that of the Accord, and the value versus the money paid, regardless of trim, is quite positively evident.
