For the past decade, Volkswagen has provided its version of the hugely popular small crossover with its Tiguan. It has garnered a significant level of acclaim for offering more seating accommodation than most vehicles its size. And with the 2018 model year kicking off the nameplate’s second production cycle, the Tiguan is better than ever before. That is especially evident with its upper-level SE and SEL trims, which share the following main attributes:
Tech Features
The Tiguan has always been renowned for its abundance of easy-to-use tech features, and the 2018 model year is no exception. For infotainment, the Car-Net App-Connect features integrates all features for optimal operation of the 8-inch touchscreen sound system, which includes Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, voice control, and a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. Accompanying the Car-Net App-Connect is a suite of security and car care services with a six-month trial subscription. Two USB ports are at the front for playing music from your smartphone or other mobile devices, and there’s one rear USB port for charging said devices. Also notable are the pollen-filtering dual-zone automatic climate control system, keyless entry with push-button engine start, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, and a rearview camera that comes with a proximity sensor. Added on the SEL are features like remote vehicle start and adaptive cruise control.
Accommodation
Blurring the line between compact and midsize crossovers, the 2018 Volkswagen is the rare vehicle of its kind to offer three rows. Thus, it can accommodate up to seven people. All seats in the Tiguan—whether it’s the SE or SEL—are covered in leatherette, with leather wrapped around the steering wheel. The front seats can be heated in during colder days to maximize comfort, and the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat includes power lumbar support to keep away stiffness during longer trips.
Ride Quality
With the second-generation Tiguan, Volkswagen focuses more on its ride quality. As a result, the crossover has a driving feel that is smoother than ever before. Credit is due to the front strut-type suspension and rear multi-link suspension for absorbing any turbulence on the road, as well as electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering for sharp and precise cornering. The available 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system only enhances the ride quality, with increased capability to ward off skidding on surfaces compromised by snow, ice, or rain.
