A new generation of VW Jettas is on the horizon. The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is quite different from its predecessor. It still serves a family of five, helps commuters enjoy their drive, and promises real safety, but the new Jetta will do more. This will be the first Jetta to ride on Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform. It has grown larger although its front and rear overhangs are shorter. The car is taller, wider and longer. A full-width four-grille and standard LED lighting make the front look quite sleek and sporty. Sculpted lines and a sloping roofline soften the car’s silhouette.
Powertrain
Although the six-speed manual is still on the menu, everyone will be focusing on the eight-speed automatic. More gear positions means more precision, and that should improve fuel economy. In addition, the engine will have a stop-start system to reduce fuel waste at redlights. The turbo engine generates 147 horsepower. Yet it’s the 184 lb-ft. of torque that makes it truly competitive in all driving situations. Adding peace of mind, the powertrain is covered as part of the six-year People First Warranty.
Interior and Features
Shoppers will like the new soft-touch surfaces. New high quality materials make every edition nicer, and the top trims will have leather upholstery for more comfort and an upscale look. The many modern design cues include a driver-centric dashboard and available 10-color ambient lighting. A Virtual Cockpit adds a screen behind the steering wheel. It includes your gauges and essential information. In conjunction with built-in navigation, you may stream maps to the screen. Speaking of screens, VW has raised the touchscreen to a higher centered position. The new model has a larger 6.5-inch display or an even bigger 8-inch one. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink come standard with the advanced system. You can enjoy music via a BeatsAudio sound system. Dual-zone automatic climate control can be complemented by heated and ventilated front seats.
Safety
Making travel less stressful and hopefully safer, Volkswagen offers avoidance features on the base model and makes them standard on the rest. To reduce side traffic issues, there’s a blind spot monitor. For reverse maneuvers, the rearview camera can be augmented by a rear cross traffic monitor. Automatic emergency braking is paired with a forward collision warning. If you still want more, higher editions offer adaptive cruise control to handle busy traffic situations. Reducing the chances of side-swiping a neighboring car, the lane keep assist helps the Jetta stay straight in its lane. Post-collision braking, which reduces the chance of a secondary impact, is available on top trims.
