When you decide to move up to a midsize luxury sedan, a number of vehicles await you. The 2019 Volkswagen Passat and the 2019 Audi A4 are standouts. There are similar features the two cars share, but there are differences as well, and those differences could determine which car you buy. In the end, we’re betting you’ll go for the 2019 Volkswagen Passat.

Value and Quality

The Volkswagen Passat is superior both in look and feel, and you could fall in love with the ride. The alloy wheels and chrome trim on the front wheel drive Passat make the car stylish, and the interior’s V-tech upholstery feels upscale. The Audi A4 on the other hand, costs a little more with negligible advantages. With the standard front wheel drive, the Audi A4 works fine and offers plenty of creature comforts like the leather interior and a high end info technology system. The difference between the two is the higher sticker price with the Audi A4. The Passat just makes more sense for the amount of money you’ll pay.

The 2.0-liter Audi A4 engine with six-speed manual transmission gives the car a zero-to-sixty time of less than six seconds, so it meets and beats the benchmark for significant performance. The engine is also economical with an impressive 27 city/37 highway mpg. The Passat runs on an aggressive 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and a sport mode. It’s not as fast as the Audi A4 off the mark, but offers a comfortable ride and superior cruising power. It’s economical with 25 city/36 highway mileage, so the advantage in economy of the Audi A4 is negligible. The Passat’s Strut-type suspension with coil springs and anti-roll bar contribute to the responsive drive. The power-assisted front discs and solid rear discs will stop you easily, so it’s hard to fault anything with the Passat’s performance.

If you want to haul the kids around, the Volkswagen Passat will serve you best because it’s a spacious interior with large doors. There’s almost 38 inches of rear headroom, and 39 inches of legroom. The Passat’s 102 inches of passenger room and 48 inches of cargo space make it easier to load and unload the kids or groceries. The Audi A4 has about an inch less in head and leg room, and though it seats five like the Passat, it’s not as comfortable in the second seat. The V-tech leather seating in the Passat welcomes drivers and passengers. The Audi A4’s leather, heated front seats and the leather dash and inlays amaze consumers. The tilt-or-slide sunroof allows you to open up the car to outdoor cruising in the Audi A4, but the Passat’s sunroof performs just as good. The Passat’s touch-screen embedded in the dash doesn’t intrude with the driver’s vision. The Audi A4’s large touch screen looks larger, but it sits on top of the dash rather than in the stack. If all things between these vehicles are equal, the Passat comes at a cheaper price.

The 2019 Volkswagen Passat is the best choice when moving up to a luxury midsize car. Because of the performance, well-appointed comfort features and all-around value, it represents the best move up to a luxury sedan. If you would like to test-drive the Volkswagen Passat, stop into Pohanka Volkswagen today.
