A little over a decade after its debut, the Volkswagen Tiguan manages to stick out in an overcrowded compact crossover market with its upscale interior, simple controls, and strong performance on the road. The 2018 model year kicks off the nameplate’s second generation of production for the North American market, with a brand-new design and a host of configuration meant to keep it highly competitive.
Performance
Powering the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is a brand-new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which produces 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Installed at the front, the engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to the front wheels to produce a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout. However, for enhanced tire grip on the road—especially when driving on terrain compromised by bumps, snow, rain, or ice—you can go with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The new I4 engine on the Tiguan uses a new combustion process referred to as the “Budack cycle,” which is expected to produce an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy.
Interior
Formerly a two-row vehicle, the 2018 model year marks the first time that the Tiguan will offer the possibility of getting a third row. With two captain’s seats at the third row, maximum capacity is expanded from five to seven people. With the Tiguan retaining its station wagon-esque bodystyle, there’s lots of cargo room, especially if you fold down the second and third rows. And with the redesign, the cabin is spacious and features elegant seating surfaces and a multi-function steering wheel.
Features
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan looks sharper than ever, with sleek lines from front to back that give it a bolder stance. The compact crossover rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, with the option of getting 19-inch ones. And LED tail lights provide an appreciated durability and higher level of illumination ability. Comfort and convenience is provided by features such as remote keyless access, push-button engine start, Android Auto for smartphone-based control, Bluetooth wireless technology, and VW Car-Net App Connect for integrating infotainment controls on the dashboard. You can enhance your worldview from your Tiguan by adding the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which is a 12.3-inch high-resolution screen for displaying vehicle information digitally and allows you to switch from one type of view to another (i.e., Classic, Off-Road, Driver Assistance, and Navigation). Also available is an 8-inch infotainment screen and the Discover Media navigation system.
Safety
For safety in the event of a car crash, the 2018 Volkswagen comes with a pair of front impact airbags, a pair of front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and a pair of head side curtains installed on the roof. Other standard safety features include vehicle stability control, an intelligent crash response system, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and an anti-theft alarm system with vehicle immobilizer. Available are advanced safety features like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, and pedestrian monitoring.
