Although SUVs have recently become extremely popular, there are still a lot of drivers who appreciate the practicality of a sedan. The 2018 Volkswagen Passat ranks among the top midsize sedans on the market. A spacious interior design and value-packed features make the Passat a great choice for any family. Not only does a stronger base engine arrive for 2018, but Volkswagen also introduces a performance-tuned Passat GT. The compact Volkswagen Jetta’s sporty driving dynamics and strong fuel economy will also intrigue plenty of car shoppers. Let’s see how these two cars compare to each other.

Performance

A new 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine comes standard on the Passat. Its 174-horsepower output enables the Passat to feel remarkably responsive on the road. Available as an option, the Passat’s V6 engine develops an even more formidable 280 horsepower. The Jetta’s performance is equally as satisfying. While the base turbocharged engine pumps out 150 horsepower, a 170-horsepower engine is optional. Atop the Jetta lineup sits the exhilarating GLI model. Its larger turbocharged engine pushes out an exciting 210 horsepower, which transforms the Jetta into one of the quickest compact cars in the segment. Unlike the VW Passat, the VW Jetta can be fitted with a traditional manual transmission.

Interior and Features

Both of these sedans bring an incredible amount of valuable to the table. Bluetooth connectivity, a 5.0-inch touch screen, and a backup camera all come standard on the Passat. Several premium upgrades are found on the higher trim levels. While music fans will be drawn to the 400-watt Fender sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay enable smartphone users to access their favorite apps. The VW Jetta offers a similar number of features. The main difference between these cars comes down to interior size. While the Passat provides 102 cubic feet of space on the inside, the Jetta has 94.1 cubic feet of space. Despite the Jetta’s smaller size, it boasts one of the roomiest backseats in the compact segment.

Safety

If you are like most drivers who are shopping for a new ride, passenger safety is probably a key concern. Fortunately, you can count on both the Passat and the Jetta to provide great crash protection. Like its larger sibling, the VW Jetta earned a five-star overall safety rating. You will be able to haul around your family with an extra peace of mind. While there is no overlooking the Jetta’s outstanding safety profile, the Passat does come standard with automatic emergency braking. To obtain this modern innovation, Jetta buyers will need to upgrade to a higher trim level. Some of the other available safety technol
