The Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Camry are two of the oldest nameplates in the midsize sedan market—and also some of the most acclaimed and commercially successful. Since the 1970s, the Jetta has used its ability to bridge the gap between economy cars and entry-level luxury sedans to become the best-selling model produced by Volkswagen. And the Camry, around since the early 1980s, has become the ultimate all-rounder: combining reliability, efficiency, and comfort. The 2018 model year finds the Camry entering its eighth generation of production with a complete redesign. Although the Jetta does not begin a new production cycle, it does have some significant upgrades and additions, one of which help it be a generally wiser choice than its Toyota counterpart.
Cargo Volume
The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is often commended by automotive writers for its large trunk, which yields 15.7 cubic feet for your luggage. Plus, you can fold down the rear bench-style seat to expand the cargo volume into the cabin when needed. Although you can do the same thing with the 2018 Toyota Camry, its standard trunk space is not as generous, since it’s measured, at the very most, 15.1 cubic feet. Indeed, if you go with the base-level L, that cargo volume shrinks to 14.1 cubic feet.
Warranty
For 2018, Volkswagen made the limited warranty—which ensures that there shall be no mechanical or cosmetic defects throughout ownership by the original purchaser—longer than ever before. The Jetta is now covered for six years or 72,000 miles, whichever comes first. It is a longer limited warranty than the ones on most midsize sedans, which include the 2018 Toyota Camry. The one on the Toyota sedan is a three-year/36,000-mile warranty. That’s literally half of what its Volkswagen counterpart has.
Crash Response System
In situations where it might be too late to react appropriately to an oncoming object or other vehicle, drivers of the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta rely on what is known as the Intelligent Crash Response System, or ICRS. When a collision occurs and the airbags are deployed, the ICRS automatically turns off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights if you are not able to do so. Although the 2018 Toyota Camry has an admirable collection of safety technologies, it does not include an ICRS or something equivalent to it.
