If you're looking for a sleek, sporty compact car, put both the 2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI on your short list. These similar models vary in power but share plenty of pep, a high-end interior, and generous warranty. Both the Golf GTI and Golf have been refreshed with a new look for 2018, although the Golf changes are limited to the exterior while the Golf GTI also gets a cabin revamp and a new engine. Here's what you need to know if you're trying to choose between these highly-rated hatchbacks.
Interior Quality
Both the Golf GTI and the Golf boast cabin design and materials that wouldn't be out of place in a much more expensive vehicle. These compacts are well-insulated from road noise and have enough room to comfortably carry up to five passengers. Both vehicles have class-leading cargo space of about 23 cubic feet expanding to 53, though the Golf slightly edges out the Golf GTI when the seats are folded down.
Performance
Both these vehicles can pack some serious power for small hatchbacks. Every Golf GTI trim is equipped with a fast-accelerating 220-horsepower turbo-four, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Tuned for performance, this front-wheel drive vehicle offers sturdy suspension that makes it incredibly fun to drive.
That said, the Golf is no slouch. It comes with a choice of two powertrains: the base 170-hp turbo-four or the sport-tuned Golf R, which has a blistering 292-hp turbo-four. The former comes with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the latter pairs with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Golf R can also be upgraded with all-wheel drive. Like the Golf GTI, it's one of the most athletic compact cars on the market. The Golf is also available in an electric version that gets a 120-mile range on a single charge.
Safety
Both the Golf and the Golf GTI have exceptional crash test ratings, including the highest ratings in every category from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star overall ratings from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration.
Each vehicle is also equipped with high-tech driver assistance features. The Golf GTI comes standard with a rearview camera, smart windshield wipers (not available in the Golf), and an automatic post-collision braking system (an upgrade in the Golf). Both cars can be outfitted with adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, forward collision and lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. The GTI also is available with park assist and automatic high beams.
