The Volkswagen Beetle's unusual shape and cultural cachet make it one of the most recognizable cars of the automotive age. It's been reintroduced twice: once in 1997 as the New Beetle, and again in 2012 as simply the Volkswagen Beetle. The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle is part of this third generation and sees several updates for the new model year, including an upgraded engine, new features, and even a fun special edition Coast model with a vibrant Deep Sea Teal exterior, Heritage alloy wheels, and plaid seats.

Performance

The upgraded 2.0-liter turbo-four on the base model, which was previously equipped with a 1.8-liter version, provides 174 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The only trim without this powertrain is the sports-oriented R-line, packing an amped-up version that gets 210 hp and 207 lb-ft. It also swaps out the automatic for a six-speed manual. The base engine provides an EPA-estimated 24/33 city/highway miles per gallon.

Interior

Plenty of connectivity is the hallmark of this sharp, modern vehicle. If you opt for the base trim, you'll enjoy a five-inch touchscreen with both USB and Bluetooth connectivity; it also has a rearview camera and automatic headlights. Jumping up to the next trim increases the touchscreen size to 6.3 inches and adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for a seamless smartphone experience. You'll also benefit from keyless entry. When you upgrade to the SEL trim, features include all those previously mentioned plus navigation, a premium audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

In addition to the emphasis on the latest technology, higher trims of the Beetle have luxurious features like leather upholstery, heated seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety

Active safety features are available on several trims of the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle. The SEL integrates parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and a blind spot monitoring system. While the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle has not yet been crash tested, it's expected to meet or exceed the outstanding rankings of last year's model. The 2017 Beetle earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration and the highest scores in four out of five crash tests from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.
