2027 Volkswagen Atlas Preview

2027 Volkswagen
Atlas

Atlas fans are getting ready for the model’s second chapter, as Volkswagen puts the finishing touches on its redesign. This second-generation version will feel more modern and upscale, with premium materials and features. In addition to a stronger powertrain, the overhaul will focus on a restyled exterior incorporating a remodeled fascia, an artful LED lighting signature, and fresh wheel designs. The interior will play off the distinctive outer lighting, with standard ambient illumination extending into the dashboard and door panels on the higher trims. Maximizing comfort and convenience is always a priority, and VW will address that with a standard 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat (with available massage), dual wireless smartphone chargers, additional leather upholstery options, and an available 15-inch multimedia touchscreen. The revised engine will round out the package, providing an additional 13 horsepower over the current model without sacrificing efficiency.

A More Modern Look

The ‘27 Atlas will retain its predecessor’s basic silhouette – strong lines and an upright stance – while adding a few modern touches. New LED headlights will frame a commanding grille, while dual LED light bars will be available to span the width of the front end, centered around an illuminated VW emblem on all but the entry-level trim. The taillights will mirror the headlights, with cross-body LED lines and an illuminated badge, while dynamic integrated rear turn indicators with customizable animations provide character. Puddle lights and illuminated door handles will be available on higher trim levels.

Pronounced lines, fenders, and side sills will sculpt the profile, while a more defined spoiler will bring a sporty feel. The restyled liftgate will sit flush within the rear end, blending seamlessly with the bumper for a cleaner look. The base grade will continue to ride on 18-inch wheels, while the rest of the lineup will get 20- or 21-inch wheels in fresh designs. The 2027 Atlas will maintain its width and wheelbase, although its overall length will increase by roughly an inch. The paint palette will grow with the addition of Sandstone, Blackberry, and Sacramento Green.

Powertrain and Performance

If the 2027 Atlas’ reimagined looks were not enough, the upcoming model will also raise the bar under the hood. Volkswagen’s new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine will pair with the existing 8-speed automatic transmission, replacing the EA888 evo4 powerplant. With an output of 282 horsepower, it’ll be the strongest Atlas yet – while also improving fuel economy over the current model. A front-wheel drivetrain will remain the default, with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel available on every trim. The tow rating will remain at 5,000 pounds.

Upscale Materials and Expanded Amenities

Look for the cabin to get an updated layout that’s refined and modern. You can expect soft-touch surfaces and genuine wood accents, premium door handles, and an open center console thanks to the shift lever’s relocation to the steering column. Lower trims will retain leatherette upholstery, while the top two trims upgrade to Varenna and Nappa leather. A dashboard “loop” with 10-color ambient interior lighting will come standard, complementing the novel exterior lighting elements, while the two highest trims add a 30-color system with an illuminated dashboard pattern and perforated, backlit door panels.

Volkswagen will also expand some amenities previously found only on the upper end of the lineup, giving lower trims a power liftgate, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, rear window sunshades, and dual hatch lights. A 12-way power-adjustable ergonomic driver’s seat with lumbar support will come standard, while the high trims get massaging front seats. A revised climate control system will add vents to the B pillars to improve climate control for the rear passengers; ventilated second-row seats will be available.

Safety and Driver-Assistance

The reimagined Atlas will come outfitted with an enhanced IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance suite that expands hands-on semi-automated driving capability. Among the updated features are Travel Assist, which will enable driver-initiated lane changes, and Emergency Assist, which will bring the Atlas to the side of the road in the event of a medical emergency. The automaker is touting standard front and rear park distance control, along with introducing an available Park Assist Driver Assistance feature that will help drivers locate parking spaces and maneuver into them. VW is also adding a front center airbag for additional passenger protection.

Technology and Infotainment

The base Atlas will get a modest multimedia upgrade, resizing its display from 12 to 12.9 inches, while the rest of the lineup will now have a 15-inch free-standing infotainment screen. The addition of the Driver Experience Dial in the reconfigured center console will allow the driver to control volume, audio settings, drive modes, and Volkswagen’s standard Atmospheres system, which will integrate lighting and sound in the cabin. Connectivity will expand with dual Qi2 wireless smartphone chargers and an additional USB port, bringing the total to seven. The entry-level audio system will have nine speakers, while the available Harman Kardon system will get 14. The 2027 Atlas will also be eligible for Premium Speech, VW’s subscription-based generative AI-driven voice assistant.
