The hot hatch segment has its rabid devotees – and some like their hatchback to be hotter than others. The Golf R rolls in to take that role for drivers who love the Golf GTI but require that much more zest. At 328 horses versus the GTI’s 241, the Golf R is a bona fide track car that will satisfy the serious driving enthusiast’s cravings. Although the two models look similar, the Golf R has a more aggressive appearance, with a quad exhaust versus the GTI’s dual pipes, larger wheels, and blue calipers rather than red. It gets a lap timer, drift mode, standard all-wheel drive, and a more premium cockpit. Although leather upholstery comes standard, the available Euro Styling Package will sub in lighter cloth and faux suede to shave off some weight; the front seats also get manual adjustability and lose the summer-comfort ventilation feature to save some pounds, while the sunroof is deleted and the exhaust becomes an Akropovic brand that weighs less than the standard. The only thing that could make the Golf R more fun to drive would be a manual transmission, alas, that’s been gone since the previous model year. Nevertheless, the Golf R and the Golf GTI have together earned the current Motor Trend Car of the Year honors, and not for the first time.
