2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The 2025 model year brings key updates to the Volkswagen GTI, which helped popularize the hot hatch
segment over 40 years ago. The company’s refresh of the Mk8 generation brings updated headlight and
bumper designs and available illumination for the upper grille and VW logo. Enthusiasts will also
appreciate that VW has swapped the haptic-touch steering wheel controls for traditional buttons.
Notably, the GTI now features a larger infotainment touchscreen and illuminated touch sliders for
better usability.
Volkswagen's comprehensive warranty remains unchanged, with
bumper-to-bumper protection lasting four years or 50,000 miles. Owners are also automatically
enrolled in the Carefree Maintenance Program, which covers standard scheduled maintenance services
for two years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Trims and Powertrain
GTI fans can buy the 2025 edition in three front-wheel-drive trims: S, SE, and Autobahn. Power comes from the proven turbocharged EA888 2.0-liter four-cylinder, making 241 horsepower. The powerplant is controlled by a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters and launch control. According to the EPA, the estimated fuel economy for the 2025 GTI is 24 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the highway. The cargo area’s 19.9 cubic feet of space can be expanded to as much as 34.5 cubic feet when the second row seatbacks are folded down.
Standard Features
The S trim has heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, single-zone automatic climate
control, fabric upholstery with Scalepaper Plaid inserts, heated power-folding side mirrors (with
position memory and passenger-side auto-tilt), and LED exterior lighting (including fog lamps). This
base GTI also has a customizable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, push-button
ignition, heated headlight washer nozzles, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing windshield
wipers, 30-color ambient cabin lighting, four USB-C ports (two per row), wireless device charging, and
18-inch alloy wheels.
The SE trim adds a power panoramic sunroof, Clubsport ArtVelours seating
surfaces (a microfiber material similar to Alcantara), and proximity keyless entry (KESSY). The optional
SE Leather Seating package will add leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-way
power driver’s seat, and a power-reclining front passenger’s seat. The Autobahn includes everything from
the SE with the leather package plus heated rear outboard seats, a head-up display, tri-zone automatic
climate control, adaptive chassis control, a front grille with an integrated illuminated light bar, an
illuminated VW logo, and 19-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
IQ.DRIVE, VW’s collection of sophisticated driver aids, comes standard across the GTI range. The included technologies consist of forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, semi-automated driving assistance, adaptive cruise control, and front and rear parking sensors. The SE and Autobahn also have road sign recognition and automatic high beams, while the Autobahn alone gets semi-autonomous parking assistance. Every trim is equipped with six advanced airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, an electronically controlled torque-sensing limited-slip VAQ differential, and a rearview monitor.
Infotainment and Connectivity
For 2025, all GTI trims have been given a technology upgrade. The standard Discover Pro MIB3 infotainment system now features a 12.9-inch display with navigation, wireless smartphone connection (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. VW's Plus Speech, a generative AI-enabled voice assistant, is available through the myVW mobile app with a one-year trial included. The S trim has a seven-speaker audio system, which is upgraded to a nine-speaker Harman Kardon arrangement in the SE and Autobahn.
