The pioneering Volkswagen Microbus was on the vanguard (no pun intended) of the modern era of small cargo and passenger vehicles. Introduced in 1950 under the factory designation Type 2, the Microbus quickly gained a cult-like following and became emblematic of the 1960s counterculture (hence, its nickname “the Hippie Van”). Although the vehicle’s popularity waned with shifting market demands, Volkswagen recently saw an opportunity to revive its iconic Microbus amid the auto industry’s current wave of experimentation. The result of this endeavor is the all-electric 2025 ID. Buzz.
The emissions-free ID. Buzz channels the spirit of the original Microbus with its retro-inspired design and vibrant exterior color palette. But it’s set up exquisitely for the modern age with a suite of technologically advanced features and a completely carbon-neutral powertrain. Trim Levels and All-Electric Powertrain
Volkswagen offers the three-row ID. Buzz in a trio of trims: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and the limited-run 1st Edition. The standard powertrain is a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup that generates 282 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. Buyers who opt for the Pro S Plus or 1st Edition can upgrade to a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system that makes 335 hp and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. The drivetrain selected will determine passenger capacity as well. FWD versions have a middle-row bench and can seat seven, but with AWD the Pro S Plus and 1st Edition will get captain’s chairs instead, reducing seating to six.
Every trim comes with a 91-kWh battery. With RWD, the maximum driving range is 234 miles per charge; AWD reduces this just a tad to 231 miles. Charging times vary, but a 10-minute session at a public DC fast charger can supply 81 miles of range with RWD and 79 miles with AWD. The ’25 ID. Buzz can also tow a small trailer. With RWD, it has a maximum capacity of 2,600 pounds, which increases to 3,500 pounds with AWD.
Cutting-Edge Amenities
The 2025 ID. Buzz comes loaded with an array of world-class features. The Pro S is equipped with perforated V-Tex leatherette upholstery, leatherette door trim inserts, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats with memory and massage, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, proximity keyless entry, rain-sensing windshield wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, USB-C charging ports, and a 60/40-split second-row bench seat with easy access to the removable third row. Its other highlights include stainless-steel pedals with “play” and “pause” logos, power-sliding side doors and second-row windows, a removable center console with storage, front and second-row footwell lights, 30-color ambient interior lighting, a 115V power outlet, heated power-adjustable side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and LED exterior lights (headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights).
The Pro S Plus adds a head-up display, a hands-free liftgate, an adjustable storage system, and a retractable trailer hitch. A heated windshield is added to AWD versions only. Topping the range, the 1st Edition boasts a unique exterior design, two-tone paint, a panoramic fixed-glass roof with electrochromic smart glass, and premium LED headlights.
Advanced Safety Technology
The Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced driving aids is standard with all '25 ID. Buzz trims. This fully loaded bundle includes adaptive cruise control, Park Distance Control (front and rear parking sensors), Front Assist (automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection), Travel Assist (hands-on semi-automated driving assist), Light Assist (automatic high beams), and Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking (VW’s proprietary semi-automated parking system). The Pro S Plus and 1st Edition also come with Area View, a surround-view monitor for added safety and convenience.
Multimedia and Entertainment
The '25 ID. Buzz features the Discover Pro Max 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with onboard navigation, wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, voice recognition, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The standard sound system is accompanied by nine speakers, but the Pro S Plus and 1st Edition upgrade to a premium 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that will delight audiophiles.
