Fans of Volkswagen’s hot hatch are happy that it’s back with new style and performance options for the 2025 model year. The exterior style changes include a new front bumper, headlights, and illuminated front badging. Inside, an enhanced 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen replaces the previous 10-inch display. The new Black Edition presents a unique look with the addition of black brake calipers, exhaust tips, and wheels, along with dark headlight and grille accents and carbon-fiber interior trim. The Euro Style Package is now available to take nearly 80 pounds off the curb weight by sacrificing the sunroof and leather upholstery in favor of cloth and ArtVelours-trimmed sport seats and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system. Plus, parking the Golf R will be easier than ever with the addition of Park Assist Plus, which measures parking spaces to prevent drivers from attempting to squeeze into a too-small spot.
The most significant alteration for the 2025 Golf R is one that brings tears to the eyes of purists: the loss of the manual transmission, leaving just a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. On the upside, the 2025 Golf R produces 328 horsepower – that’s 13 more ponies than its predecessor – making it the most powerful production Golf yet. Like every new Volkswagen, the 2025 Golf R is protected by a four-year or 50,000-mile warranty and comes with the Carefree Maintenance Program, which covers two years or 20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance.
Trims, Powertrain, and Performance
The 2025 Golf R has two trim choices: Standard and Black Edition, both of which are available with the optional Euro Style lowered-weight package. The powertrain pairs Volkswagen’s 2-liter TSI (Turbocharged Stratified Injection) 4-cylinder engine with a 7-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The combination generates 328 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, while returning an estimated 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway. A Volkswagen R-Performance 4MOTION all-wheel drivetrain comes standard.
The R-Performance 4MOTION all-wheel-drivetrain with torque vectoring distributes power variably between the front and rear axles and between the left and right rear wheels, allowing for up to 100 percent of the torque directed to the outside wheel on a curve. Progressive steering and an electronic differential lock enhance the dynamic cornering response, while adaptive chassis control delivers split-second damping adjustments. The Golf R is graced with cross-drilled 14.1-inch front and vented 12.2-inch rear brake rotors, with blue-painted calipers adorned with R branding on the front. The Black Edition swaps the blue calipers for black.
Standard Amenities by Trim
The Golf R Standard boasts a Nappa leather interior, heated and ventilated front Top Sport seats (a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with three-position memory and a power-recline front passenger seat), a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, heated rear seats (with a 60/40 split seatback), a power panoramic sunroof, a Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a Climatronic Touch three-zone automatic climate control system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a head-up display, ventilated wireless smartphone charging, Volkswagen Car-Net Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, push-button ignition, four USB-C ports (two front data ports and two rear charging ports), stainless-steel pedal caps, and multi-color ambient lighting. The Black Edition’s differences are cosmetic: it adds black exterior badging, headlight elements, and exhaust tips, as well as genuine carbon-fiber interior trim. It also has black-painted 19-inch alloy wheels.
Safety and Driver-Assist Technology
The ’25 Golf R comes equipped with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver-assist technology array. The suite includes adaptive cruise control, semi-automated travel assist, an active blind-spot monitor, rear traffic alert, front assist, emergency assist, and lane assist. The novel Park Assist Plus measures parking spaces so that drivers won’t bother trying to shoehorn into a spot that’s too small, and front and rear park distance control helps them ease into spaces that are adequately sized. VW also includes an intelligent crash response system, which shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights when a crash results in airbag deployment. An automatic post-collision braking system is standard as well, along with dynamic road sign display, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, adaptive front lighting with dynamic cornering lights, electronic stability control, anti-slip regulation, engine brake assist, and a rearview camera.
Staying Informed and Connected
The Golf R has Volkswagen’s 12.9-inch Discover Pro touchscreen with navigation, voice control, and App-Connect, which allows for wireless or USB smartphone integration. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD Radio are channeled through a premium Harman Kardon audio system with nine speakers and a subwoofer. Standard access to Volkswagen’s myVW connected vehicle services enables remote commands, last parked location, roadside assistance, and service reminders.
