2024 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
The Volkswagen Jetta GLI was introduced in 1984 as the sporty variant of the venerable Jetta compact sedan. The GLI provides the handling and performance expected from a German sport sedan while retaining the practicality of the underlying Jetta model. The current (seventh generation) Jetta is the first to be built around VW’s MQB platform, which also underpins the iconic Golf hatchback and the popular Atlas crossover. This MQB architecture provides a more dynamic driving experience compared to previous generations.
The main attributes that set the GLI apart from its standard Jetta stablemate are a more powerful turbocharged engine, a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, and distinctive exterior styling tweaks such as a honeycomb grille insert. For model year 2024, Volkswagen commemorates 40 years of the GLI with a new trim below the Autobahn. This 40th Anniversary Edition features unique exterior treatments and an exclusive upholstery pattern, among other differentiation.

Trims and Powertrain
The 2024 Jetta GLI comes in two trim packages: 40th Anniversary Edition and Autobahn. Both are front-wheel drive and propelled by a 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox, while a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. The Jetta GLI with the manual transmission is EPA-rated for 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy estimates with the automatic change to 26 mpg around town and 36 mpg on the open road.
Standard Features
The standard equipment for the 40th Anniversary Edition includes heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, wireless device charging, stainless-steel pedal caps, ambient cabin lighting, a 10.25-inch configurable digital instrument display, fabric seating surfaces, LED exterior lighting with automatic headlights, adaptive chassis control, a front differential lock, and a body-colored rear spoiler. It also has heated power side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, four USB ports (two per row), and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The Autobahn trim adds a power panoramic sunroof, leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver's seat, a driver's position memory system, variable-ratio power steering, and remote start.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
The 2024 Jetta GLI has IQ.DRIVE, a collection of the latest driver-assist features. These technologies include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. The Autobahn trim also includes lane assist/travel assist, which helps maintain the vehicle’s lane position when using adaptive cruise control. Emergency assist is standard with GLIs equipped with an automatic transmission. The system will slow down and stop the vehicle if the driver doesn’t respond to specific safety alerts.
Supplemental safety equipment includes multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor.
Infotainment and Connectivity
VW’s MIB3 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system graces both 2024 Jetta GLI trims. Its features include navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote services via the subscription-based Car-Net. The 40th Anniversary Edition gets a straightforward multi-speaker audio system, while the Autobahn is upgraded to a BeatsAudio arrangement with nine speakers.
